Chemistry of transition elements

You will be able to

• Describe the reactions of aqueous metal ions with hydroxide, ammonia and chloride ions in terms of precipitation and ligand exchange.
• Predict the formula, charge, coordination number and shape of a complex ion from the metal ion, the ligand and its denticity.
• Explain the colour of a complex using the splitting of the d orbitals and how the ligand changes ΔE.

You will be able to

• Predict whether a redox reaction of transition elements is feasible using E° values, and write the balanced equation.
• Calculate the concentration of a reducing agent from a titre using the mole ratio found from the electrons transferred.
• Explain why a transition element can act as a catalyst using its stable oxidation states and E° values.
