About this lab
Vary the halogenoalkane type, the halogen and the reagent to predict substitution or elimination, the mechanism and the hydrolysis rate.
You will be able to
Classify halogenoalkanes as primary, secondary or tertiary and describe their nucleophilic substitution reactions with NaOH(aq), KCN, NH3 and aqueous silver nitrate.
Describe the elimination reaction with NaOH in ethanol and recall which conditions give substitution and which give elimination.
Explain the different rates of hydrolysis of chloro-, bromo- and iodoalkanes using the C–X bond energies, and relate SN1 and SN2 to primary and tertiary halogenoalkanes.
