About this lab
Edit the branches of a two-stage tree, condition on B, and test whether A and B are independent or mutually exclusive.
You will be able to
Calculate P(A ∩ B) by multiplying along the branches of a tree diagram and P(B) by adding the branches that end in B.
Calculate a conditional probability P(A | B) = P(A ∩ B) ÷ P(B) from a tree, and explain why it differs from the branch probability P(B | A).
Determine whether events are independent by comparing P(A ∩ B) with P(A) × P(B), and show that mutually exclusive events with non-zero probabilities are not independent.
