About this lab
Substitute a line into a curve one step at a time, solve the quadratic, pair the answers, and turn the line until it becomes a tangent.
You will be able to
Solve a linear and a non-linear equation simultaneously by making x or y the subject of the linear equation and substituting it into the other.
Find each partner value from the linear equation and give the solutions in pairs, such as x = 1, y = 3 and x = −3, y = −1.
Use the discriminant of the resulting quadratic to decide whether the line meets the curve at two points, touches it as a tangent or misses it.
