Biology 5090 · Question 1[8 marks]

A student observed a section of plant stem tissue under a light microscope and produced a biological drawing of one palisade mesophyll cell. The student used an eyepiece graticule calibrated against a stage micrometer to determine cell dimensions.

(a)

State two subcellular structures visible in a plant palisade cell under a light microscope that are absent from an animal liver cell.

[2]

(b)

The actual length of the palisade cell is $80\text{ }\mu\text{m}$ . On the student's biological drawing, the image length of the cell measures $48\text{ mm}$ .

[3]

(i)

Convert the actual length of the cell from micrometres ( $\mu\text{m}$ ) to millimetres ( $\text{mm}$ ).

[1]

(ii)

Calculate the magnification of the student's biological drawing. Show your working.

[2]

(c)

Describe the function of the cell membrane in regulating the movement of substances into and out of the cell.

(d)

State one safety precaution the student should take when preparing a wet mount of plant tissue using a glass coverslip.
