A student investigates cell proliferation during tissue growth and gametogenesis.
State the biological role of mitosis in tissue repair.
Describe the molecular and structural state of chromosomes during interphase immediately prior to the start of mitosis.
In an examination of onion (Allium) root apical meristem under a light microscope, a student counts a total of 180 cells in the field of view, of which 27 are observed undergoing active mitotic division. Calculate the mitotic index of this meristem tissue as a percentage.
Explain why gametes produced by meiosis are genetically different from one another, whereas daughter cells produced by mitosis are genetically identical.
Adult stem cells harvested from human bone marrow are multipotent. Outline how stem cells differ from fully differentiated specialized cells, and explain how stem cell transplantation can be used to treat patients suffering from leukemia.
