Anaerobic respiration occurs in human skeletal muscles during vigorous physical activity and in microorganisms such as yeast during commercial biotechnology processes.
State the word equation for:
anaerobic respiration in human skeletal muscle.
anaerobic respiration in yeast cells.
An athlete participates in a 400-metre sprint race lasting approximately 50 seconds.
Explain why the athlete's muscle cells respire anaerobically during the sprint, despite breathing rapidly.
Describe the physiological consequences of lactic acid accumulation in the muscle tissues.
Explain how the oxygen debt generated during the sprint is repaid in the body during the 30 minutes of rest after the race is completed.
Yeast is widely used in commercial bread-making.
Describe the role of anaerobic respiration of yeast in causing bread dough to rise.
Explain why eating freshly baked bread does not cause alcohol intoxication.
