Examiner's note. Name the four parts and say what each does: the user interface asks the questions and shows the result; the knowledge base holds the facts; the rule base holds the IF … THEN rules, written with the help of human experts; the inference engine applies the rules to the facts to reach a conclusion and decides which question to ask next. A good answer adds that the system can explain its reasoning. The classic mistakes: saying the knowledge base makes the decisions (the inference engine does), and describing an expert system as one that learns by itself; that is machine learning.
