Job Enrichment
What is Job Enrichment?
A non-financial method of motivation in which a job is redesigned to contain greater responsibility, more challenging work and more decision-making, so that the work itself provides achievement and recognition. It is distinct from job rotation, which moves an employee between tasks at the same level of responsibility. Job enrichment requires that the employee be trained and given genuine authority; adding responsibility without either produces stress rather than motivation.
This definition is part of the People in Business chapter in Cambridge O Level Business Studies.
Common mistakes with Job Enrichment
- "Job rotation and job enrichment are much the same thing." Fix Rotation moves a worker between tasks at the same level — the job gets wider. Enrichment adds responsibility and decision-making — the job gets deeper. Why They solve different problems. Rotation cures monotony; enrichment supplies achievement. Naming the wrong one for the case loses the application mark.
