What is Classifying Statistical Data?

Deciding what kind of variable has been recorded before any statistics is done with it. Categorical data consists of labels or groups with no numerical size, discrete data consists of separate countable values with nothing in between them, and continuous data is measured and can take any value across an interval. The classification determines which table, which chart and which average are legitimate, so it is the first step of every statistics question rather than a preliminary to it.
